Incandescent lamps work by passing an electric current through the tungsten filament inside the bulb, heating it to incandescence and bringing it to a temperature of approximately 2700 K to produce light. When the lamp is switched on, because the filament is cold and its resistance is low, a current surge occurs for a few tenths of a second, reaching 10-12 times the steady-state current. The new incandescent bulbs for traffic signals contain a low-pressure gas that provides 10% greater output and keeps heat levels low, preventing the enclosed lamp from overheating or being damaged.
